Today, SEGRON announced that it has raised 3M euros in a series A funding round from Credo and OTB. To any of you who have made use of SEGRON’s ATF to automate testing for your networks, devices, or services, we hope this won’t come as too much of a shock. Following a period in which we completed several successful commercialization trials in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and elsewhere, we demonstrated that our product was truly the most innovative and comprehensive on the market.
Needless to say, we’re all extremely excited about it over here. But we think that our customers—current and future—should get excited about it too. Why? Because it means that we’re going to have more tools, resources, and capacity than ever before to help our customers to verify service quickly and efficiently. We’ll be able to more effectively orchestrate testing with out-of-the-box devices and our customers’ existing test tools in order to improve test coverage, boost network quality, and ultimately yield a positive testing ROI.
Spreading Our Solution
To get a little more specific, this round of funding is going to be a big help as we try to grow the geographical footprint of our offerings. As we expand beyond the European countries in which we currently operate, we’ll be able to provide more and more telco operators with the tools and support they need in order to create and sustain a culture that prioritizes testing and carries it out in an efficient and repeatable manner. This may not sound like much, but the ability to reliably verify service in a way that’s consistent from one update to the next can have a transformative effect on the operations of a network operator or service provider. How? First, by creating closer alignment between testing and engineering: rather than letting an outsourced team uncover bugs and service gaps that then sit unresolved, you can work from clear, internal documentation to address the results of your tests.
Secondly, it helps individual telecom businesses to build up and retain institutional knowledge—not just about how to perform tests efficiently, but about the results of those tests and the most common problem areas within their service offerings. Ultimately, this makes it easier to roll out regression tests in order to keep quality of service high, just as it gives testing more visibility within any given organization. As we begin to build out our operations even further, we’ll be preaching this philosophy far and wide, attempting to get telecoms in new regions to rethink the way that they orchestrate their testing and helping facilitate a much wider transition to automation technology.
When asked for comment on SEGRON’s new funding, Marcin Hejka, Co-founder and General Partner at OTB Ventures had this to say: “The telecom and wireless industry can greatly benefit from modern test automation solutions. SEGRON is uniquely positioned and goes way beyond any available End-to-End test automation offering… We believe SEGRON has immense potential in the rapidly growing automation market and are glad to be supporting the team in their scaling efforts.” Naturally, we’re flattered—but we also think that Marcin has identified a crucial point: that the need for automation in telecom testing is growing rapidly, and that most automation providers haven’t yet tapped into the full potential that these new paradigms offer. Like we said above, we expect that this new financial support will help us add value to customers in new ways by building on service offerings that already include: real-time Signal Trace and system log analysis within test cases, and Audio Verification and Signalling Analysis with the ability to cover network domains from CS, PS, and VoLTE to VoWifi and IoT.
In this way, we’re increasingly moving telecom testing beyond end-to-end, i.e. focusing not just on endpoints but on what’s happening in between. Are there any signalling errors when your customers try to make a call? Are any failures occurring that don’t yet directly impact service? Thus, service verification becomes less a checklist of potential use cases and more a window into the larger health of your network and services. Add in continuous regression testing, and you quickly put yourself in a position to stave off any sudden dips in quality of service. The result is that your customers stay happy, and you’re able to show a positive testing ROI by staving off the costs of poor services (i.e. disappointed customers who decide to take their business elsewhere).
The Future of Telecom Testing
Because the telco domain has been rapidly increasing in complexity with the increasing fragmentation of use cases and devices, the rise of IoT devices, and the looming specter of 5G, the kinds of process improvements we’ve been discussing would be virtually impossible to attain manually. The number of use cases that a test engineer can run through in a day has been dropping in recent years, from around 10 to as few as 6. And yet, those same complexities make effective service verification more critical to success than ever. This is why we’re convinced that automation is the future of testing within the telecom domain. Not simulations, mind you, or automated tests run on rooted devices—but true automation that tests use cases on the same devices your customers will be using.
Like we said, we think this is the future of testing, and we’re extremely excited to get this opportunity to continue putting our theories into practice and bringing our vision closer to reality.
